Huawei Digital Power and Cambodian renewable energy developer SchneiTec have commissioned the country's first TÜV SÜD-certified grid-forming energy storage system (ESS), marking a milestone in Cambodia's shift toward more resilient, renewable-based power infrastructure.
The battery energy storage system supported by the project is capable of storing 16 megawatt-hours of electricity and providing services to help with renewable energy integration, transmission congestion relief, and balancing of supply and demand, among others.
“To achieve full energy security, Cambodia may need to develop large scale of solar PV with battery storage combined with hydropower, biomass, wind and some other indigenous fuels,” he said.
However, considering the country's historical energy mix, the existing solar capacity appears positive. As of 2011, Cambodia had no solar power plants, and solar energy was not a part of the country's energy mix. Cambodia's current installed solar capacity is slightly over 400 MW, but the country is targeting 3.1 GW by 2040.
In 2018, Cambodia introduced a solar generation regulation, a new driver for the country's solar PV system development. Cambodia's grid-scale solar development started with just a 10 MW pilot in 2017.
Cambodian households and businesses are also increasingly investing in behind-the-meter (BTM) solar energy systems as they're much easier and faster to deploy and costs are lower than utility grid rates, market analysts highlight. That tracker also reveals 620 MW of capacity is on the way from two solar farms currently under construction, with an additional four installations planned.
