24 -- China National Machinery Industry Corporation, also known as Sinomach, has agreed to invest USD996 million in a public-private project to build a pumped storage power station in Cambodia, complementing its existing hydroelectric projects.
The CANSTOREnergy research team is motivated by the opportunity to reduce fossil fuels use, to consider the diverse needs and goals of both urban and rural communities, and for Canada to lead in a transformation of the energy system with economic benefits nationally and climate benefits globally—a made-in-Canada renewable energy storage solution that considers local concerns and displaces fossil fuel use.
This funding will focus on non-lithium technologies, long-duration (10+ hour discharge) systems, and stationary storage applications. In September 2024, DOE announced up to $100 million in funding to support pilot-scale energy storage demonstration projects.
The new 40 MW / 80 MWh system, installed at the Dunamenti gas power plant near Budapest, is the biggest of its kind in the country and part of a broader European push to shore up renewable power with large-scale battery backup.
The new project will be developed on the site of TotalEnergies' depot in Feluy. It will have a power rating of 25 MW and capacity of 75 MWh, thanks to the forty Intensium Max High Energy lithium-ion containers supplied by Saft. Start-up is expected at the end of 2025.
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka's state-run Ceylon Electricity Board said it has begun seeking funds to build a 600 MegaWatt pumped storage plant to integrate solar and wind energy and maintain grid stability. The CEB wanted to tap multilateral lenders to reduce electricity sales prices.
The project is developed in Vise, Liege province, in partnership with Belgian energy company Luminus. The facility is designed to stabilise Belgium's electricity grid, support the further integration of renewable energy capacity, and help meet the national and EU decarbonisation targets.

There will also be agrovoltaic activity in the parks of Calanda, Santa María (in the municipality of Samper de Calanda) and San Macario (in the municipality of Andorra), which will enjoy the collaboration of Cierpe for the cultivation of cereals, and Natur Nature for aromatics.
A rural promotion project was also developed, with a leading role played by entities such as Apicultura La Cerrada and its Museum of Beekeeping in Andorra, with the involvement of the Hotel Santa Bárbara and the Arkha rural accommodation, consisting of the promotion of sustainable tourism initiatives.
Project owners BSTOR and Energy Solutions Group have started building separate BESS projects totalling 440MWh of capacity in Belgium, following financial close, both of which will use Tesla Megapacks.
